Which size picture for which room? A size guide

The size of a pixel picture is set by its block count: each block is about 1.5 cm, and the frame adds 3 cm all round. A piece 16 blocks wide is about 27 cm with its frame. Below we have drawn three groups from the real measurements of our pieces.

Small: 24–33 cm

The tea glass (27 × 33 cm), the nazar (27 × 27 cm) and the Maiden’s Tower (33 × 24 cm) belong here. Small pieces:

• can stand alone on a console, a chest of drawers or a desk,
• make a quiet corner in a kitchen or a hallway,
• turn into a “mini gallery” when a few are hung side by side.

Medium: 50–65 cm

Pieces such as the Layered Christmas Tree (56 × 72 cm) and Mehmed the Conqueror (63 × 81 cm) are the focus of a room. They hang by an armchair, over a console or at the head of a bed as a single piece. They are big enough to keep the detail alive in portraits, but they don’t overwhelm a wall.

Large: 90 cm and over

Long, narrow pieces such as the Stockings by the Fire (93 × 39 cm) sit as a horizontal band over a fireplace, a sofa or a bed. Such pieces give a room its direction; it is best not to put much around them.

Proportion to the furniture

A picture sits well when its width is between about half and three quarters of the width of the furniture beneath it: a piece 55–80 cm wide for a 110 cm console, a piece 25–30 cm wide for a 40 cm side table.

Hanging side by side

Instead of hanging small pieces one by one, you can make a set. In our sets we leave a 5 cm gap between the pieces; with a gap that narrow the eye reads them as one whole. The Bosphorus Set is four small pieces hung in two rows.

From far or from close?

A portrait with many blocks only turns into a face when you stand a little way back; close up you see squares. If you are thinking of a portrait, make sure there are at least two or three metres in front of the picture. Symbols and objects are lovely close up as well.
