In the studio, an artist paints the angle-cut blocks one by one with a magnifier and a fine brush.

From the workshop

Every block passes through our hands.

We cut pine battens into blocks and give each block’s face a 30 or 45 degree angle. Then we paint them with a magnifier and a fine brush and set them one by one. From across the room it is a simple picture; up close, a surface that changes with the light all day.

How we make them
Close-up of the piece showing a tulip: angle-cut, hand-painted pine blocks and their shadows.

Tulip, up close: angle-cut faces in side light, and the pine grain showing through the paint.

The Nazar kit: blocks lined up in a compartment box, each colour in its own numbered cell, beside a layout map on straw paper showing only numbers, with glue and a brush.

Make it yourself

The blocks, a numbered guide and the board come in one box. A weekend and a cup of tea; the guide does the rest.

A custom order: a dog portrait in a natural wood frame on the wall, while a hand reaching in from the left holds the photograph of the same dog that was sent in.

What is pixel art in wood?

Pixel art tells a picture in small squares, each carrying a single colour. At Ahşapix those squares aren’t pixels on a screen but 1.5 cm pine blocks, each one cut by hand, given an angled face and painted. From across the room you see a picture; up close, a wooden surface you want to touch.

  • Handmade wooden wall art

Every pixel art piece is made to order, 100% by hand. A natural wood frame is included in the price; you can choose black or white instead.

  • A premium statement piece

Large pieces built from thousands of blocks become the centre of a living room or a study. The light changes through the day, so the picture never looks the same twice.

    The Heritage collection
  • A gift with meaning

We make custom pixel art from a photo of a pet, a home or a memory. The Bosphorus Set and the smaller pieces are ready to give, too.

Questions you may have

All questions
How are the pieces made?

Each piece is first designed on a grid. Pine blocks, their faces cut at an angle of 30 or 45 degrees, are then painted by hand and placed on a board one at a time. For the full story, see the ‘How we make them’ page.

What is in a DIY kit?

Each kit's page lists, separately, what comes in the box for the size and options you choose and what you need to provide yourself. In short: all the blocks for the design, a numbered guide and the backing board.

Are the DIY kits hard to assemble?

No previous experience is needed. The guide shows the position and colour of every block, row by row. Each kit has a difficulty rating based on its number of blocks and colours; if it is your first time, we suggest the designs labelled ‘Easy’.

How do I choose the size?

The same design can be made in different sizes depending on the block size. Each piece's page gives every size in centimetres. As a general rule, a piece looks balanced when it is between half and two-thirds the width of the furniture below it. The more blocks there are, the more detailed the image looks from a distance.
